Spring is in the air, pollen counts are rising, and some of us are already beginning to experience allergy symptoms. Unfortunately, due to the COVID19 pandemic, we are unable to provide you with the benefit of allergy shots. Indeed, we have learned that a few of our patients have contracted the virus. If the office had remained open for shots, it would have put many patients and staff at risk of exposure. In fact, I am now in isolation following an exposure to an individual who tested positive for COVID19. In the absence of allergy shots, I would like to at least share some overall advice going into the season. I hope you will find it helpful. 1. Remember the basics: minimize time outdoors, keep your windows closed, use air-conditioning and HEPA filters. 2. When needed, take non-sedating antihistamines: cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra) or loratidine (Claritin). 3. You can also use Ketotifen (Zaditor) eye drops and saline nasal spray. If still having nasal congestion, take a nasal steroid such as fluticasone (Flonase), mometasone (Nasonex), or triamcinolone (Nasacort). All of the above medications are over the counter (OTC). 4. For the asthmatics: make sure that you have albuterol available (we always prescribe 3 refills). If COVID19 is suspected, adults should try to use inhalers, rather than nebulizers, as they are less likely to spread the virus in the air. Although somewhat controversial, it is currently recommended that patients who take inhaled corticosteroids such as Qvar or Flovent, as well as Advair, Dulera, Symbicort and Breo, continue taking them as prescribed. In 1984, Dr. Harish worked as a research associate at the Department of Medicine at Columbia University, and later participated in clinical research studies in the Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Division of Albert Einstein Medical Center. Peer - reviewed articles published by Dr. Harish include a publication in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, which offers a description of a comprehensive Asthma treatment program which reduces hospital and emergency room visits in patients with chronic and severe Asthma.
